Adding documents

Tap + and choose PDFs from Files or iCloud Drive, or open a PDF in Crossleaf from Mail or AirDrop. Files from Files and iCloud Drive stay where they are — removing one from Crossleaf never deletes your file.

Searching

Type a phrase in the search field. Crossleaf finds the words in that order, in every document at once; capital letters and accents don't matter. Tap a result to open the page at the match. Your recent searches appear when the field is empty.

Scanned PDFs

Pages without a text layer are read with on-device text recognition after you add the document. While that runs, the document shows "Reading scanned pages…" and you can already search the pages that are done. Nothing is uploaded. Recognition works best on clean, straight scans.

"No outline"

Section paths in results (Document › Section › Page) come from the PDF's own outline, the bookmarks you see in a PDF reader's sidebar. A document without one is still searched; its results are shown by page only.

New revisions

If you added a file from Files or iCloud Drive, just replace that file with the new revision under the same name. Crossleaf notices the change next time it opens and indexes the document again.

Apple Pencil

Open a page and tap the markup button. When you tap Done, your drawing is saved into the PDF, so it shows up in other apps and on your other devices.
